In 2023, the Government of India rolled out E20 fuel—petrol blended with 20% ethanol—as part of its green energy push. This move was expected to benefit both the country and consumers by reducing emissions and fuel imports. However, as the fuel became more widely available, users began voicing concerns about reduced mileage and potential compatibility issues with existing vehicles.

One such concern surfaced recently on social media, where user @iAnkurThakur shared a screenshot of an email from Renault India’s customer care. The email stated that the Renault Triber MY2022 model is not E20 compliant and that the user should avoid using the new fuel blend in the vehicle. The post quickly gained attention, sparking questions around fuel compatibility, especially for older or non-E20-certified vehicles.

Government Clarifies: E20 Impact Marginal on Mileage

In response to rising discussions, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas released an official statement on X (formerly Twitter). The ministry explained that ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, leading to a marginal drop in mileage—about 1-2% for E10-calibrated vehicles and 3-6% for those not tuned for E20.

However, the ministry reassured consumers that this drop can be minimized with better engine tuning and the use of E20-compatible components, which most modern vehicles now feature. They also noted that safety standards and material compatibility for E20 fuel are well established under BIS and Automotive Industry Standards.

In certain older vehicles, the government acknowledged that rubber parts or gaskets may need replacement after 20,000–30,000 km of E20 fuel usage. These replacements are inexpensive and typically part of routine servicing.

Renault India Responds to Owner’s Concerns

Following the viral post, media outlets contacted Renault India for clarification. The company responded by acknowledging that the 2022 Renault Triber was certified under the then-applicable E10 fuel norms for type approval and production testing.

However, Renault cited a joint durability study by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and ARAI, which tested various fuel blends—including E20—in vehicles certified for E10. According to Renault, the draft report concluded there was no adverse impact from using E20 fuel in E10-compliant vehicles.

Based on these findings, the company stated that no serious issues have been identified in Renault vehicles running on E20 fuel, even if they were initially certified only for E10.

Conclusion

While some vehicle owners remain skeptical about the switch to E20, both government data and manufacturer statements suggest that most modern cars—including the Renault Triber MY2022—should not experience serious problems with E20 usage. Minor adjustments or part replacements may be necessary over time, but the overall impact appears to be manageable.

As E20 fuel becomes more prevalent, manufacturers and regulators continue to monitor vehicle performance and address consumer concerns to ensure a smooth transition to cleaner energy alternatives.
