The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved the extension and restructuring of the Central Sector Scheme ‘Skill India Programme (SIP)’ until 2026, with a total outlay of Rs 8,800 crore for the period from 2022-23 to 2025-26. This decision highlights the government’s focus on creating a skilled and future-ready workforce by offering demand-driven, technology-enabled, and industry-aligned training nationwide.
Following the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed reporters, emphasizing that the approval reflects the government’s dedication to empowering individuals with relevant skills for the evolving job market. The restructured Skill India Programme will integrate three key initiatives: Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), the Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), and the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) Scheme. These programs will now operate under the unified umbrella of the Skill India Programme.
The combined initiatives aim to deliver structured skill development, on-the-job training, and community-based learning, ensuring equitable access to high-quality vocational education for both urban and rural populations, including marginalized groups. According to an official release, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has already benefited over 2.27 crore individuals through these flagship schemes.
This revamped approach seeks to bridge the skill gap, enhance employability, and align training programs with industry requirements, ultimately contributing to India’s economic growth and workforce readiness.
